Remembering a Legacy

Roma

Hank went to the University of Rome for medical school. He saw it as an adventure.

But he didn’t speak a lick of Italian. As he was learning the language, he had to learn all the medical terminology in English and Italian! The oral exams were frequent and in this challenging other language. After many, many sleepless nights, he finally made it through. All six years of medical school in Rome, and he became an expert in the medical sciences AND Italian. He eventually went on to finish his residency in the States. Originally, he wanted to be a surgeon, but then he discovered the best way he could help his patients was to be a radiologist. He could put his all into it. He really wanted to help people. Dr. Hank was a pure and wonderful soul.

Maryann

Maryann; as tiny as a munchkin, but as fiery as a firecracker. Walking down the street in NYC and she got hit by a car. She wound up in the emergency room at Long Island College Hospital. Her friend brought her to the hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Her friend met her there and said “there’s this cute doctor working in the other room, let me see if I can get him to view your Xray”. That’s when Hank met Maryann.

They traveled the country together. A grand road trip and they ended up in Las Vegas. The phone call to their families went like this: “Hey guys, we got hitched and Elvis was our witness”. At the time, Elvis impersonators in Vegas were all the craze.

That was 1980. Forty-six years of love and adventure.

Classical

“When I was three years old, I remember my dad playing a song on his record player. I loved its franticness. We ran around the house chasing each other. We were listening to Flight of the Bumblebee. Dad explained to me the instrument that represented the bee. It was so fascinating to hear something so chaotic and understand how complex it must’ve been to create. Because of my dad, I understood this at a young age. He was brilliant. He could teach abstract things better than anyone.” – Ethan

Hank, I will never forget when we were playing in league at The Lake Club. I was as nervous as could be because you and I were playing the judge for score. Our first hole was No. 5, a par 3. I stepped up and hit my shot about three yards short of the ladies’ tees.

You calmly looked at me and said, “Don’t worry. Calm down—I’m not like your dad.”

We went on to win the match and each got a free Lake Club shirt. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish. Miss you, brother.

What fun times we had with Hank & Maryann. Our favorite was when Rob & I were invited by Tom & Cyndi Duncan to join the 4 of them in Cabo San Lucas. We golfed, we swam, we played card & board games, we fine dined by the ocean to fireworks on my 69th birthday! And we danced! Oh how great Hank & Maryann can dance! My favorite was when we “busted out” a couple of dance moves right in the middle of one of the restaurants we dined at! So fun! Rob & I so treasure those wonderful memories we shared with Hank. We love you Maryann and look forward to sharing many more with you. Love, Rob & Merle Bouffard

    1. They were such a great pair, and it is perfect that you shared this about their love of dancing. Mom read this post just now and it brought back beautiful memories. Thank you!
