Most of you reading this won’t know me and my wife Connie. We have had the intoxicating privilege of being friends with Hank for over 40 years. Actually, Connie and Maryann have known each other since 3rd grade. It is for this reason that Hank and I would sometimes get into trouble with them. (It wasn’t anything that Hank and I did).
Connie’s 1st trip abroad was to Italy with Hank & Maryann, back in 1982! (Ethan’s origin story). Trips with the four of us included Iceland, Croatia, Italy, Alaska, California, Grand Canyon, Glacier Park, Colorado, Canada, the Baltic, Norway, the Netherlands and more.
We have too many inebriated stories to tell. On one occasion, I recall being stopped by police as we tried to drive into Sienna, Italy, just days before the famous horse race, Il Palio. Hank claimed (in Italian) that we already had hotel reservations and the police let us through. Miraculously, we got the last rooms available! Then, from the lobby of the hotel, we heard men singing as they led a horse to the central square. Naturally, we followed and were thrilled to see a practice round. As I was trying to get a picture from above the raceway, Hank knocked on a random door of an apartment surrounding the track. Later, I learned that he told the people (in Italian) that I was a famous photographer from the US – and they let us in! These are just a couple examples of Hank’s natural abilities as a leader. Faced with uncertainty when traveling, I will always ask myself “What would Hank do?”
The four of us explored the world together, sometimes remarking “We might not be back this way again.” Hank, we can’t return to those places with you, but its been the journey of a lifetime. You will always be in our hearts.
